Joining Brakes?

Joining Brakes? was created by jordan
I have a slight problem. My rear master cylinder cannot be mounted in its stock location due to no clearance for the linkage. There is no room because the 2004 gsxr swingarm is much wider.

Has anybody ever tried running the rear brake off of the front brake master cylinder. There is 2 places for hookup on the distributor deal that bolts on between the fork tubes. Could you run one line to the rear brake, and splice the other to run to the two front discs?

Please help. Am almost ready for powdercoating when mockup is done:cheer:

it is possible....but it's not that simple....you would have to use a proportioning (I think I spelled that right) valve with a bias knob on it to adjust how much front and rear brake is applied when ya grab a handful...it is used on choppers some when people want to clean up the handlebars with no brake lever and run front and rear brake off the foot brake

Don't try it! You've got only one life and it'd take considerably more than one life for you to survive a trial and error brake setup. Linked brakes typically operate a couple of pots in the front and a single one in the rear. It's all about proportion and balance, leave it to the engineers!

I bet you'll have more success remounting the real master cylinder and linkage.

okay then any ideas on mounting the rear master cylinder? I will try to set up some descriptive pics 2morrow.

Another idea just hit me!!! I guess the last one didn't turn out very well, but here it goes. At first I thought about mounting the master cylinder to the outside of the frame, but then I wouldnt have a side cover. But what if i just made the rod that pushes up on the master cylinder come up on the outside of the master cylinder, then cut it and made it come back in an inch or so, then back up? Same concept, same mounting location, just modified a little. Would also require cutting a tad bit off of the side cover.

why not find a place to mount the master cyl and build the linkage to it, you can then get a custom break hose made to the caliper

Thats kinda what this idea is, except mounted in the stock location. The problem is that there isnt much room to mount anything because behind the side covers is full of a monoshock setup.

On my '78 KZ1000 Stage III project bike, I will make a support for a Grimeca rear brake master cylinder since the '97 Suzuki Bandit 1200 swingarm is much wider than the stock swingarm near the pivot bolt part of the frame, so much so that I needed to remove the rear brake lever frame support that was welded onto the frame by Kawasaki. The Grimeca rear brake M/C will be mounted outboard of the frame like you see on many modern sport bikes.

trying to get the pics from my phone to the computer, but this is what I have come up with so far.

I already cut off the linkage holder deal welded onto the frame previously, and made my own mor inconspicuous linkage holder.

To solve my clearance issue, I bolted the master cylinder onto the outside of the frame instead of on the inside. This puts the rod end of the linkage on the outside, and the brake lever on the inside. I then cut the brake lever about 2 inches from where it slides onto the linkage, welded in another bar that brings it out about 2.5 inches, then welded the rest of the brake lever onto that. It seems to work just as well as before, and the brake lever is back to its near stock location. The only problem is that I have a master cylinder sticking out the side of the frame. I thought it would be kinda cool to cut the side-cover around where the master cylinder comes out( just comes out a few inches into the bottom of the master cylinder), then cleaning the master cylinder up with some nice paint and stuff. Think it will turn out alright!
