Hi, I need to do a front brake master cylinder rebuild on my 81 750 LTD. The manual I have doesn't give any directions. They say special tools are required. Anyone have any step by step instructions they might want to send? I did a search here and didn't find any info. Thanks.

Good question as I have the same bike.I think there is a snap ring that needs to get removed.I'm not 100% sure but I think you remove this snap ring and take the piston out.I shall investigate on my factory manual(I downloaded off this forum I think-for free;) )Give me a couple minutes and I'll check it out.

Nope, looks like a straightforward job.According to my manual you take a "thin bladed screwdriver" and pry in the tabs on the holder that hold the piston.Looks simple enough.Keep us posted.

I have rebuilt the mastercylinder on my 1981 J. I suspect its M/C will be the same as yours.

First check that you can get the repair kit. No point in pulling it apart if you cannot get the parts. Even in New Zealand I got these off the shelf and they were reasonably priced. Have a look at the parts diagram for assembly order.

As has been discussed the piston assembly is held in the M/C by a simple plastic clip with two lugs that fit into two slots in the sides on the M/C body. Remove lever first then using a screwdriver push these lugs inward through the two slots. It should then pull out and the piston assembly with it . Note order that parts are in: Slotted washer etc.

I had the bore of my M/C inspected by a brake specialist before I assembled it. It needed no work at all. Assembly is very simple lubing piston with fresh fluid.

The task is very simple and I think all the warnings are all about legal liability if the brakes dont work!
