How to check oil?
09 Nov 2007 16:17
Fork oil that is... In my 84 Voyager 1300. I straightened the forks, but I lost some oil out the air holes and the book I have is for the 1200 Voyager and seems to be different than my 1300.

I checked the American Voyager Ass'n site, and I can't find anything on fork oil.
Here's their site link, if you want to noodle around...
www.amervoyassoc.org/1300TipsWP.htm
I have a V XII, and it takes 352 ml in each fork. The AVA has a forum; you can check there and they'll give you the right answer.
Good luck!

HiJJ,
According to the manual you need about 360cc of 10W20 to fill the forks. If you're doing a complete teardown the DRY capacity is 391cc's. This is the part I hate: If you're going to try to measure the oil level you should look toward 155.5mm from the top of the inner tube with the spring removed and the fork completely compressed.

Here's another info link probably already known about(but didn't see anything here either about fork oil capacity
).
6cylKaw
If not already planned, when correct volumn is eventually learned and installed (forks fully assembled except for caps, and front wheel suspended) can use a wood dowel as dipstick to measure distance from top of fork tube to oil level. Note this measurement in maintenance log and thereafter easily keep levels proper and equal absent worry about exact volumn needed and minute differences required for dry-fill versus wet-fill, etc.
Same procedure believed applicable to most oil-filled forks.
