Nope, they're not hard to replace. The only tricky part is making sure your route the new cable along the same path as the old. This is so the cable doesn't bind or snag when the handlebars are turned. The most common way I've seen that sone is to route the new cable then slide out the old one. You'll need to be aware of how to adjust your cable, new ones tend to need a little adjusting when first installed.

A shop manual(Clymer or Kawasaki) is a good purchase if your interseted in doing more of your own maintenance.

Hope this helps...Sam

Thanks. It seems that the starter cover is over lapping the sprocket cover so i have to take that off first, then take off the sprocket cover.

If your bike is like mine, you can slide the sprocket cover out from under the starter cover to service anthing behind it.

Don't forget to lubricate the pivot while you have the cover off. If that area starts to bind, it can make a cable snap.

got everything apart now. Just gotta wait till the cable gets here. It wasnt as bad as I thougt it would be, but I ended up taking off the starter motor cover off to get the sprocket cover off. Lubed the swivel well. Cotter pin was easy getting out. Im just glad the clutch cable broke at home and not on the road!!!

will let you know how installation goes.

Nick :)

A little practice enables shifting just fine without the clutch cable. To get rolling from a dead stop is a little tricky but can be done either by offside pushing and jumping onboard, or pushing forward while in the saddle, or using the electric starter (on earlier models without clutch safety interlock such as KZ900LTD) to propel forward in first gear while cranking. :)

The clutch safety interlock don't matter if the clutch cable snapped, the clutch handle won't be hooked to anything anyway if the cable snapped :)

I have used the start in gear method on motorcycles, cars, pick ups, and even eighteen wheelers (at 80,000 lbs), pain in the butt when in town with lot's of stoplights though :woohoo:

got the new cable installed tonight. Took about an hour with all the adjustments and testing. The new cable feels so much smoother (thanx Z1!!!!) It was pretty easy. I used some chain lube on both ends to insure that it will las another 30 years :P

Its cold out and I cant ride till saturday, but I did start it in my 4 season room to get the feel of what adjustments I needed to make. Im happy!!

Thanx all!!
