Lubing the cable prior to installing it, and then at least once year after that is a good habit.
Also don't forget to apply grease to the "barrels" on the ends of the cables, since this is usually what causes the cables to break = an ungreased "barrel" won't pivot like intended, and will cause the cable to bend in that area every time it's used, eventually causing the cable to break, and almost always when in traffic ("Murphy's Law" :pinch:).
