The best thing I've found to use so far is shocks off a 500 Vulcan. They are about 2" shorter than stock and bolt right on with no issues at all and they look like stock. I've currently got a set on my 77 650 C-1 that I bought off ebay for $29 inc. shipping. Here's a pic.

Perhaps already considered, but would be mindful about maintaining sufficient rear tire-fender clearance as shocks compress (so as not to rip out the under-fender wiring). If front end is also reduced by raising fork tubes in triple clamp, beware of headers contacting front fender at max compression (say fork dive under extreme braking, hitting pot hole, etc.). And less ground clearance for header in any event.

That said, I also like 'em lowered. :)

I have a nice pair of progressive shocks, just about new, that I'll sell you for $50 + $15 for shipping (they're heavy). They should be a perfect fit for your bike and are 12" long.
