Help! On today's 4-hour round trip my new speedometer cable fell out of the speedo 5 times! What's with that? Should I have used a locking agent or just tighten it on with a wrench? I've only installed it finger-tight. My old one did the same the last few years. This seems to happen only at highway speeds.

Try using a pair of Vice-Grips to tighten the threaded collar. Be careful not to screw up the knurled surface when you snug it in. This should take care of your problem.

Another idea would be to use teflon (plumber's) tape on the threads on the speedo fitting. This will tighten up the matching of the male and femal threads.

I would only use a non-permanent locking agent as a last resort.

Ditto the pliers, mine fell out 2-3 times before I wrenched it on tight.

I also tighten mine with pliers. If you want to keep from bunging up the knurled collar just use a piece of leather (from an old belt or shoes) between the collar and the jaws of the pliers. You can make it very tight without damaging the appearance. Ed
