A question about rotor bolts .. was created by brich
I need to purchase some rotor bolts and can't seem to find anyone who carries them. Can i just use some new bolts from the Home Depot and use some Locktight and the steel tabs to keep them in or do I need a certain grade bolt? Anyone know where to get some? I want new ones as the rest of the bike is pretty new.

Thanks
-brian

6 bolt. I called Redline and the guy told me that he don't have them. Said the Z1's have a crazy thread pitch. He said he can only order them through that Japanese PMC compnay (4 weeks at least), or special order through Kawasaki ($5 an bolt and 3 weeks).

Rob over at Z1 told me they are special order too. D@mn .. who would have thought some rotor bolts would be so hard to get!!

Dude .. i know what I must do now .. i must buy used .. from the OldKawman! :pinch: He will probably berate me for bothering him for a lame order of 6 used bolts. Sucks too cause I really want 12 new ones!!

Someone please save me .. one of you guys must have some used Z1 rotor bolts you can sell me ... PLEASE!!!

I bought new rotor bolts from McMaster-Carr. The problem is the head is larger and I don't remember if they worked with the locking tabs. I'll look at home this weekend and let you know. I don't remember what I ended up doing, so I'll have to check it out. I do remember is was an unusual bolt though.

FWIW...I got rid of the factory locking tabs and used SS lock-washers,but I also used loctite.3 or 4 years now without a problem of them coming loose.B)

I have have used Hardware store bolts on two of my bikes. Keeping in mind several factors. First, make sure its a grade 8 (non stainless) bolt. Two, make sure you are using correct threads. I think they are the fine pitch (1.00 or 1.25) cant remember. Three. loctite, loctite, loctite and a locking washer. No problems with this setup for years on my bikes.

There is no need to buy original unless a concours resto is your thing.

Sounds like you want your bike looking as sweet as you can. I understand, I'm the same way;) It's those little things that make all the difference. I see everything on mine that needs redone.
They are different pitch than the KZ too.
What's old kawman want for Z1 bolts now a days??

well once again Z1 Enterprises will be my saving grace. Rob just wrote me back and told me they finally got some from PMC. $15 a set .. of course i need 2 sets. Kaw still makes them and are $4.46 a piece. So looks like I will be spending $30 for 12 bolts .. oh well. I waste more money at the bar buying shots.

OldKawMan hasn't gpt back to me yet, but I admit I was hoping for a response just to see what he said. ;)

Interesting enough, I rolled to the Home Depot bolt bin just to see and I managed to match them up with 8mm 1.0 X 25mm. So i bought some just to hold them in place while I put my brake system on. Im not going to ride with them as they are not grade 8's and are just some crappy HD bolts.

Well time to break out the CC and hit up Z1 Ent!! LEt's see if I can keep myself from buying other stuff I don't need.

OK, mine are for the 4 bolt KZ1000 set up. I wouldn't have guessed that the bolts were different, but mine are 10mm x 1.25. I had to buy a box of 25 but they were still cheaper than the factory bolts. The heads are larger but they do work with the locking tabs. I have an aftermarket rear disc with a spacer and they wouldn't fit in that one.

It looks like McMaster Carr does have the ones you need. Check part # 91180A534. You have to buy 50, but they will only cost you $8.79. I've bought a lot of hardware from them for my MKII resto.

Anyway, it sounds like Z1 has you all set up.

Believe it or not, the Morris Mag kits for the 750 twins (sold by Kawasaki with a Kawasaki part number) included Grade 3 SAE bolts for the rotors
Of course being the shade tree engineer that I am, I replaced them with Grade 8.

I have never seen a Grade 8 metric bolt, all the ones I have seen are rated 8.8, 12.9, ect, I think (but I'm not sure) that 8.8 is comparable to Grade 8.
