this week i am upgrading to progressive springs up front and was wondering if there was an aftermarket rear shock i could get my hands on. id like to upgrade the stock suspension before i get my pistons in and my head back from APE. of course some day i will go to a more modern setup. any suggestions would really help i would like to stay with the mono shock (uni-trac)thanks in advance.

I think Works still sells one for around $600.
Cheaper way is to install a GSXR shock, but I forget which one fits, check at www.750turbo.com

There used to be a shock length chart linked off oldskoolsusuki.com, the perverse polisher, but can't seem to find it. Like steell said, 750turbo.com has a lot of info regarding shock and swingarm swaps. If you're looking to upgrade suspension, wheels and brakes, dump the Kawasaki rear end and go for a complete GSXR swingarm/shock/linkage/wheel etc. My rear suspension is pieced together from 5 different bikes, and I still have the stock shock. Go with one lump, save yourself the headache and expense. 750turbo.com has the info.
Does the '97 GSXR have top or bottom shock linkage? It will be a lot easier if it has bottom linkage, but nothing is impossible.

fossil im not really sure if it is top or bottom. im going by there tomorrow so ill take a look. the 97 i have has all suspension related parts ex. wheel, rotors, calipers, every thing is there. i just put new tires on my bike and would really just like to upgrade what ive got for the moment. im doing the front end rebuild this week. im more concerned with the 810 kit right now and getting the obscene amount of cash to APE so i can get my head back(spare head i had built by APE!).

I run a ZR7 rear shock. ZR7 guys run a zx6e rear shock, with a remote res and (I believe) rebuild capability. I think there is another shock out there, but I don't recall right now. If it has an upper res attached to the shock, I can't see how it will work w/o a battery relocation, so I think the GSXR rear shock is bunk.
Does it make a difference. Not sure, my front end is toast, but I did get to the outer edges of my Pirellis on a spirited ride with a CBR and a 675 Daytona. I think that a 20 year newer shock can't hurt.
I think as my comfort level on the bike increases, and learning the track ways, I will scrape a peg this year, on (I am sure of this) 20+ year old front springs and fork oil.
Biggest difference: learning to weight my pegs.

Oh, and if that was that you on the V&H pipe thread that said that you don't want to take a dremel to your bike, you don't want to get into a lot of this, because it will require grinders/cutters/tools of destruction.
