Ok for some time now my chain has been slipping and I thought I needed a new chain but once I took my saddlebags off and looked at the chain I saw something disturbing! I can't believe this.

And yes I have replaced it with a new on and no more chain slipping! yeah!

I hate to sound like a bad guy, but man you need to pay more attention to maintenance before something you neglect gets you in trouble. I suspect that if you had been lubing the chain on a regular basis you would have spotted the worn sprocket long before is got that bad. Now the big question: have you inspected the engine sprocket? If not you need to do so ASAP. I'll climb down (or fall off) off my soap box now. Ed

Like Ed said (a ryhme every time:silly: ) check that front sprocket and replace the chain if you didn't already. It willl be streched and will chew your nice new sprocket up in no time. When they get streched and you put them on a new sprocket they only pull on one or two teeth at a time, were as a new chain will pull on five or six at a time, thus spreading the load out more.

With it that bad, it looks like it's time to bite the bullet and get both spockets and a new chain.

Yes a sprocket like that means no lube on the chain. I just replaced a 58,000 mile KZ650 sprocket and it looked nothing like that, although the front countershaft sprocket was beginning to show signs. The front, being about 1/3 the teeth will wear 3 times faster. I've seen worse, reminds me of my cousin who did no maintenence and had a Honda CB900F. Oil filter bolt was stripped and seized so no problem, just don't ever replace the filter. Fork seals leaked so bad the brakes were saturated in oil so no problem, just ride until no more oil in the forks, hence no more oil to leak, problem fixed. Sprockets and chain? Well you get the idea, no teeth on the sprockets eventually.

321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

Yeah I guess I deserve all that! haha

Honestly though It never really felt bad until like a week ago and the chain would slip only with high torque
and in first gear so I didn't realize how bad it was. now i know you all think my bike is probably like everyone else's and I would have a clear view of the sprocket at all times but i have saddlebags that hang down over the rear wheel so it's wasn't like i saw it every time i rode, The good news is that i recently changed my clutch cable and i got to see the front sprocket and it looks great! Now the chain, well I will def. get a new one this week! thanx for all the hazings! love ya'll too. ;) :)

here is what i mean by not being able to see the sprocket.
