loose caliper was created by spectrerob
Tech help please. I started to notice a little noise coming from the front. The noise went away when I grabbed any amount of brake. When I shook the right front caliper, it moved back and forth a very little bit. I tried to tighten the shaft bolts, but they were tight. I replaced one of the caliper holder shafts to see if that would make a difference and it didn't. The caliper on the other side has just a tiny bit of movement and the back seems to have none. The movement on the right front cannot be a 16th of an inch, but it does seem to be what is making the noise. Is it possible that the caliper holder shaft is worn and the caliper holder needs replaced? The bike is a 1982 KZ1100 D1 spectre with 13,000 miles.
Thanks for your help.
Rob

I have a post on this somewhere in the murky past.

The caliper mounting bolts that secure the caliper to the fork leg are supposed to be isolated from the mounting bracket itself by four isolators (o-rings) that sit inside a recess milled for them. Each mounting bolt gets two isolators.

They dry up / break / go away.

good luck with it

Hi Rob, I found the post. . .

Here for reference is the 1982 KZ1100D1 Spectre front caliper diagram from Kawasaki.com

I've never disassembled this particular model caliper, but from looking at the diagram, am wondering if the "BUSHING,SHAFT CALIPER 2" #92028 might be damaged or worn and thereby causing the noise by allowing play in the floating movement.

Am pleased to report continuing silent disk brake operation under any riding condition and application pressure. Was lucky to have stumbled onto what proved for me a perfect solution with both Kaws. :)

My calipers all "float" on the slide pins, and from what my mechanic says and I have researched, this is the way that it is supposed to work.

So if your brakes are like my 84 GPZ's then your calipers should float, and the other calipers pins need to be looked at. Probably just need lubed. I use a pic and lift one edge of the dust boot and put a couple of drops of oil under the dust boots that keep the shafts clean, and let the oil work its way in.

Now for the squealing. Could be anything from the pads not being bedded in properly to needing to have some anit-squeal put on the back to maybe a slightly warped rotor (I have one of these).

But I am pretty sure that your calipers should float, that is why the caliper is a two piece design.

84 GPZ750. Modded with stock Kawasaki parts: ZR-7 shock, ZX-6 coils, GPZ1100 throttle, EN454 brake, GPZ900 fuse box, etc. and non stock: Ken Sears mirrors, K&N filter, Pirelli Sport Demons.
