Has anyone converted a CSR1000 to belt drive? I have aquired a belt and pulleys that came of a Harley, but just wondering if anyone else had done this change. Any info anyone has would be great.

Currently have a 1981 CSR1000 everyday rider and a 1973 Honda CB750 currently changing to a hardtailed chopper

Thanks,
Scott

Just curious but why convert? What is the advantage of a belt over chain in this case?

There is no advantage. Been doing some research and it seems that with a belt you can not run a wide back tire. For instance the belt drive harleys rear tire is more narrow then the front. So unless your frame and swingarm is realy wide it wont fit. My father has a 2004 with a belt and it is 1/8 inch from the tire.
Also the belt is only as strong as the width. A belt on a Hog is rated at 90 hp, and is I believe 2 inches wide. So unless you plan on using pizza cutter tire with a 3 inch wide belt and major changes to frame:sick:
Just look at all the bike builds out there are chain with high hp numbers.

There are lots of be advantages to belt. Quiet, almost no maintenance, clean.
The 04' HD had the big belt but it was 1.5 inches. The new ones are 1 inch Kevlar reinforced and they are good for 130-140hp and they make a heavy duty if you need.
But about putting a HD set up on a KZ. I would measure the belt vs. chain length and see if they were close before you start getting things together, a custom belt would be very expensive. A good machine shop could machine the rear sprocket very easily; the front sprocket would require some work though. It won’t a bolt on modification

I know there are Kevlar ones out there and yes they are expensive:pinch:
I dont understand how it is queit:dry: Do you hear your chain moving when you are cruising:whistle: . Yes I can agree that they are clean:)
neil1964 has aquired one and I believe he had the idea of just to put on the set he got. But it sounds like he is going to need a whole different set up:(

my chain and sprockets on most of my bikes are worn, but yea i always can hear them going around, on most any bike i ride, you get use to it fast and it does not bug me, i like the belt because it does not require attention and you do not get the "lift" of a shaft. i do not like to worry about stuff, that being said i did pick up a stone in the primary on my 97' bagger when i was cow trailing in the badlands and it sliced my belt halfway around the diameter, i got real worried being 900 miles from home in the middle of the boonies, but that belt went another 20,000 miles before i changed it, and that was because it had 70,000 on it and it was due. belts are real strong, but converting a 1000 i don't think it would be worth it, the maching of the components would be pretty expensive.
