I have no idea how it would hold up to the weather but the thicker foam type that 3M makes would probably work better than the thin stuff they use for carpets. If you went around the edge with a clear silicone, using a toothpick to apply it would help too. Or, have you though about using JBWeld or the two part clay type epoxy they use for gas tank repairs? It comes in a roll about the size of a roll of nickels and won't run the way JBWeld does and works just as good. You pull a chunk of the roll and knead it to together with your fingers to mix it to a uniform gray. I cut the mounting plate off a spare carb I had to make a spacer for my single carb modification and plugged the throttle shaft and other holes with it and it works great.

Yeah, between the weather as The Milkman mentioned, and the inherent spacing you'll get from using thicker tape, I doubt you'll be pleased with the results.

I'd say, gouge out some of your filling, maybe digging under the bracket to get a nice lip (you don't have to get too far in) and use some epoxy to adhere. Seep through your badge holes and under the new lip you made. If you touch up your badge, that'll also give you a nice screwless look to them .

3M makes trim/molding tape for cars that is 2 sided and about 1/8 inch thick. I have used it in the past with good results. You could probably pick up a roll at Napa.

Its been some time, but I recall my brother using some stuff called 3M Fast Tack Trim Adhesive to re-attach lighter metal trim pieces to his mustang when he repainted/restored it. Couldn't hurt to read up on it to see if it would work for you.
Unlike the tape mentioned earlier, this is in a tube.

good luck.

When I got home last night, I actually measured the thickness of the tape. It's 1/16th inch, not 1/8.
