Increase in rear sprocket size? was created by 76Z900
Hi All,

Somewhat new to the website; just purchased a super clean, low-mileage near stock (wrong exhaust) 1976 KZ900A4, identical to the bike I sold while in college many, many years ago -- 25 to be exact.

Is there a series of posts/links in the forum someone could direct me to regarding the change in RPM resulting from either increasing the rear sprocket/decreasing the front sprocket?

I see this issued referenced and discussed, but haven't found the definitive threads (yet).

Funny, cruising at a reasonable/sane pace seems to hold more interest now relative to the stoplight to stoplight heroics I found so entertaining in my youth.

Thanks!

I went up 4 teeth and still find highway RPM reasonable at 75 MPH, but I mostly cruise back roads so I rarely even need 5th gear :) I want to say 75 is around 5500 or so, I usually cruise 55-60 in 4th gear. I'd suggest going down a tooth in the front instead though, chain guard didnt fit on my bike anymore, required some modification, and the chain was way too short.

I found upping the gearing actually made the bike more controllable and easier to launch hard without spinning the rear tire or lifting the front! It also loafs along at lower rpm cruising and gets better gas mileage. I went from 15 to 17 teeth on the front sprocket when I changed over to 530.
