size of nut? and how many links?
05 Jul 2007 14:16
What size is the nut that holds the small sprocket? also How many links do I need to cut on a new 630 chain? I have the rear wheel all the way back, and still too much play. Any help would be great. Thanks in advance, Jim

It would be helpful to know what kind of bike you have.
Your front sprocket nut it probably either 27mm or 32mm depending on the bike.
On my KZ1000, it is 32mm. 630 chain has 92 links.
On my previous bike (KZ440), the nut was 27mm and the chain had 102 links (I think).

Yea, Sorry abpit that. It's an 1982 kz750. This is a work in progress for my nephew. I found out he has the old chain, so we can use that to go by. Thanks for all the help. Jim

Welcome to KZr Jim.
I'm assuming that you want to cut the chain to remove a couple of lengths because it's stretched?
I don't know what your funds situation is, but if it's stretched, you'd be better off replacing it with a new chain. Simply removing a few links and re-adjusting might get you by for a little while, but it will stretch again. Or even worse yet, it could possiblly break while you've got the throttle pinned WFO. :pinch:
Don't forget to replace the sprockets, since they're likely worn too.

An english socket, 1 1/16" works on that sprocket nut.

Better off getting the sproket and chain kit and a lot of people like to switch it over to a lighter chain I think the size is 530 or 520. Also the new chain sold in the kit is usually 10 l;inks longer than what you would need.

Thanks for all the help. We ended up taking 2 links off. May need one more, but we'll see. Got the right size socket, but how do I break the nut loose, with out turning the tranny over? Every time I tried the srpocket would turn. Any help would be great, Thanks again, Jim

There are a few ways to get the sprocket off. The best way is an electric or air impact tool with a 1 1/16" or 27mm impact socket. If you don't have impact tools you about have to improvise a stop of some kind. Either blocking the rear wheel from turning or wedging heavy paper between the sprocket teeth and chain. Either of these means the chain has to be on the bike.
321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

I would not stick a 2x4 in my spokes bud!. If the chain is on the bike, then simply get a friend to apply the rear brake. Think about it.
The impact wrench is the best way, followed by a breaker bar and long pipe.
