Changing fork oil and seals - KZ1000LTD
18 Jun 2007 18:23
I am changing fork oil on my '82 KZ1000LTD and probably the seals too. I bought the bike used and put some air in the forks and it started weeping oil slightly. I took the air off and it doesn't leak now.
I've ridden it a thousand miles since then and no leaks- is this an air problem or are my fork seals ok? It's easier to do just the oil versus the seals too.
thanks
David

A wiser man than I once said: "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure"
Heavier fork oil (say...20w) might give you a fork that *felt* like it had air pressure, but doing the seals is probably a good idea if they were leaking under air pressure.
Disclaimer: This advice comes from a guy who taped a rag onto his fork top to soak up seeping oil for several months until he got around to changing out the seals and oil.
Figure about half a day and 25-30 dollars for seals, boots and oil. Have some snap ring pliers handy too...and a vise.![:) :)](/media/kunena/emoticons/8.png)
