I performed a 630 to 530 conversion on my 1000. You need 3 parts: a 530 front sprocket, a 530 rear sprocket, and a 530 chain. That's it. 530 sprocket are usually not offered in the same teeth sizes as the 630 so make sure you figure out your gear ratio before ordering.

One additional minor part is a spacer for the front sprocket.

With the Z1 it comes stock with a 15t front and 35t rear and a 92 link 630 chain.

The front sprocket has a raised boss on the back - a result of a design change to accomodate the new 630 o-ring chain widths (the original Z1's came with non o-ring chain). The rear sprocket should have a spacer behind it - a 1/8 thick stamped steel spacer about 7" in diameter. This was a retro fit part from Kawasaki when o-ring chains were installed on the Z1's.

One question to ask yourself is are you happy with the stock gear ratio? Lots of customers want to have slightly better cruising and avoid constantly trying to find 6th gear...

So... 15/35 equates to 18/42 in 530 sprockets, the chain goes from 92 link to 110 link. If you want taller gearing for cruising, a 40 tooth on the back will help a little.

If you want more acceleration, then a smaller sprocket on the front will solve that...

Benefits for 530 - lots - cheaper, longer wearing, less driven weight (which means more HP at the rear wheel), and 530 chain is more available (you can find it at most bike shops whereas 630 is becoming hard to find) and you can choose from some weird variety of colored chain too...

I went from a 630 right to a 5/8" offset 530 and never knew about the spacer on the front sprocket. Good call Jeff!
