getting the rust off the spokes

i have finally got around to cleaning up the 900, so far i have polished all the engine covers and the really look good( i'll try to post pics of it later tonight) But there's still a few things like the spokes and the rear shocks, that i cant get the rust off to save me. So does anybody know any products i can use to get the rust off? thanks

I haven't used it on spokes, but good ole' Naval jelly works pretty on bolts and and rims and the like.

Just last night I tried some polishing compound on the spokes, and, nope. Mine aren't rusted, they're more like corroded. I don't know what to do about that.

What did you us on the engine cases? I used polishing compund, and then Mothers, which shined them up, but they still look sort of stained in places.

Have you tried some paste rubbing compound (not polishing compound and in the tub, not the bottle)?

The RED/ORANGE turtle wax paste is cheap, works wonders and when used lightly, doesn't cause swirling, hazing, clouding or dulling of the final product. I use it on my pipes, engine casing and such.

Gasoline is also an increadible cleaner...Not to much for rust, but in general.......

Incidentally, when you look at the paste, it's kinda rust coloured...Just makes you want to slather it all over things. Maybe that's just me.

I didn't have any luck. I ended up ordering new spokes from Buchanons.

Cleaning all the spokes is a tedious task to say the least.

My 77 B1 was rusted badly and I used pretty much the same method as Sandy (right down to the box of beer).
Sometimes even reverting to the dremel tool with scotchbrite like attachments and pieces 320 of 400 grit sandpaper. They look really nice now.
But I now own a 74 GTR enduro that's has rusty spokes!
So now I have to do it ALL OVER AGAIN!!! :pinch: :pinch:
I think I'll save that for a winter project.

Rumor has it that apx 1 inch wide strip from a sheet of crocus cloth may be used by pulling it back and forth against the spoke and working it along the length of the spoke. Akin to using a shoe shine rag.
