Fork oil

My Clymer manual says to use 10w non detergent fork oil, my question is I have 10w non detergent oil not "fork oil" Is there a difference or could the regular oil be used?? The oil in there now looks like it is red or pink.

Also if anyone ever replace oil in a kz1000st/e1 ids the fork springs under load ??

I would suggest you use a quality "Fork Oil" such as Bel-Ray rather than motor oil. Fork oils are formulated especially for forks including additives that preserve the seals. I've changed the fork oil in my '77 KZ650C1 every 2 years since it was new using 15w Bel Ray fork oil and have never had any seal leaks or other issues. I figure a couple bucks every 2 years is pretty cheap insurance. The 15W makes the ride a little stiffer, but I find that to fit my riding style best. Ed

May be automatic transmission fluid. Some folks regularly use ATF in their forks. :)
