Trouble with front sprocket cover / clutch KZ440

Hello -

I just got done putting new sprockets & a chain on my 1980 KZ440 LTD. I thought I put the front sprocket cover back on correctly but the gears aren't shifting right.

I can only put the bike in first gear. I can start the bike, put it in first, but when I try to let the clutch out to go in first gear the motor dies. I know it's not my sloppy technique.

I think there's something not engaging correctly between the clutch cable / release lever or something. I didn't disconnect the clutch cable from the sprocket cover when I took the cover off.

I have a service manual - it mentions making sure the clutch push rod is in place when reinstalling the cover. What does the clutch push rod do & what position should it be in when I put the sprocket cover on?

Thanks very much
Dano
