1980 Z1R Fork Swap
08 May 2007 07:13
Hello to any of you Kawasaki Guru's. I want to put modern upside down forks on my Z1R without modifying the frame, can this be done. What year and model of forks can I use? I also want to lower the bike a bit in the process. Thanks

Shooter,
Looks like you found your way over here. Congrats.
I know that Solomrus, Fossil, and quite a few others have done this swap. I don't remember if I told you, before at DB, but the frame shouldn't require any mods except maybe new fork stops (but you could always modify the new triple trees for this). Pretty much any USD except older 1100 Gixxer will lower your from end anywhere from 1-4 inches. Remember that just by switching from a 18-19" from rim to a 17" front rim will drop the front end too.
Post pics when you have them.
Later, Doug

I installed a '96 GSXR750 USD front end on my bike but I had to cut the fork lock off the frame to clear the ignition switch and cut down the fork stop to work with the Suzuki triple clamp. I am using the stock GPz tapered bearings with a modified KZ1100 stem pressed into the GSXR lower triple clamp. The front end and 17" wheel dropped the front 3".
Apparently the ZX front ends are an easier swap as far as the stem goes but I don't know about the fork stops.
Do a search, there's been a lot of info and different ways to do this.

Thanks for the info guy's. On the ZZR swingarm you installed, did you go with a mono shock, or conventional 2 shocks? Was the swingarm, bolt on, NO MODS? What year ZX forks would be my best choice? Any way of getting some pictures of your bike? I'd really like to start ordering parts to get this project started. Thanks again
