How do you remove the footrest studs? was created by KnuckleBuster
I need to remove a couple of the footrest studs on my 81 KZ750. How do they come out of the frame? Press fit? I can't seem to get 'em. Thanks for the help.

(They are #10 in the diagram on buykawasaki.com)

There's a backing nut on each one. They're hard to see, but if you can get a finger around the backside of one on the inside of the frame, you'll feel it. I think they're either 13mm or 14mm, I don't recall exactly...

Even when you remove the nut from the back, the stud is threaded into the frame - you will need to double nut the stud to remove it - they can be a pain to remove - some come easy, some don't...

K'Buster, agree with G'geek & Jeff. They always look like they have been pressed in, however, they are screwed. I sometime remove them and sometimes leave them in, depending how tight they are.
I've always been in a quandary as to whether they are cad/zinc plated or not? They always seem to be painted with the frame, I think!

the nuts on the inside of frame need to come off,if the double nut idea doesnt brake them loose go to sears and buy a stud extractor it goes on a 1/2" drive ratchet and should break them loose!

It's called heat, and it's your friend. Heat the external part of the stud that protrudes. It will transfer heat through the stud itself and should assist in cracking it loose. (Think heating a stud screwed into something that's anodized... you don't want direct heat as it will discolor the anodization!:() Heat them perpendicular to the frame (blow the flame from behind forward, not right at the paint.)

All you need is a small mapp torch.

Oh, another thing that will work if you don't plan on reusing them is to get a nut to put on them and weld it onto the stud. Then use the heat trick, and wrench at that bastid. You'll never be able to reuse them, but hey, it sounds like you don't want them anyhow, right?

Thanks for the responses! I used the old double nut trick - sounds dirty, doesn't it) and it turned right out. I would like to have welded the crap out of it, but no need now. I had to remove it for rearset clearance - I didn't realize it, but the other side came out with the outer nut, no trouble at all!

Thanks again. I'm getting closer and closer to finishing this thing.
