Does anyone know what it takes to put an GPz1100 swingarm into an 78 kz1000 frame? I can't get enough traction with the narrow tire on it now an dunlap 110/90B18 61H I did have an Bridgestone Spitefire 130/90 18 69H on it but there wasn't but an fraction of an inch clearance.

If the 130 fits, and there is clearance, why not go back to it? A lot less hassle than fitting a new swing arm. Just my opinion.

You'll get more contact patch with a 110 on the stock rim than you will with a 130 on the stock rim. With a wider tire on the same size rim you pull the beed in to make it fit which rounds the profile of the tire more.

Try getting a more sportier tire in the stock size, such as a Dunlop GT501 or a Kenda Challenger if you don't have one.

If you're taking it to the strip, lower the tire pressure to 20psi or so will give you a flatter footprint too.

All of these options are cheaper than a swingarm swap.

1986 gsxr swingarm fits perfect at the pivit bolt on the swingarm. Use a 91 or 92 gsxr wheel so you can have the 180/55/17 and either make your shock mounts or gusset the frame for the mono-shock set up. I have done a example of both. You will also need to convert to a 530 chain and 5/8 offset front spocket. There are a couple of other minor changes too but nothing major. The mono-shock really cleans up the lines and you can also lower it at the same time. If you think that sounds cool you should see it with the inverted forks and matching wheel and newer style front fender. Maybe I ought to post some pics if I can get some on my computer?

The 1000 in my avatar has that swingarm. I used a Zx-6D wheel though. Didn't have to machine the sprocket carrier, just used a 5/8" offset 530 18T front sprocket.
I'm also in the middle of going mono-shock on my 76 900 using a 91 Gsxr750 arm, 93 1100 linkage, and '04 CBR600RR shock.

I guess what I'm trying to say is...you can stay with th stock rim, but if you really want to do a arm swap, there are easier routes than a Gpz arm.

The early Gixxer arm is about the easiest aside from maybe a Gs1100 arm (do a search on here to find about this swap). The Gixxer arm is the same width at the pivot and both the Gsxr and Kz share the same pivot bolt diameter. My frame only needed one little mod and that was some clearence to the back of the brake pedal mount. The mount is about .5" thick, and needs to be ground down some. I did a simple trial and error until the arm could swing past without hitting the mount. I had twin shock mounts and a brake stay mount welded on. Pretty simple.

The Zx wheel required a bearing swap and for the spacers to be machined to the bigger axle size (Zx = 17mm vs. Gsxr = 20mm). I then trimmed some thickness from a Bandit 600 rear caliper mount to get it to work. The Bandit 600 and ZX-6D use the same diameter rear brake rotor.

Mounted everything up and that's pretty much it.
Right now I have a 160 ContiForce on it and so far I like it. I haven't taken it to the track but I'm sure it'll hook up better than the 110 I used to run.
