1978 kz650 - rearsets? was created by mydemonsdream
hi, all.

just got me a membership. glad this place exists. bought a bike about 2 years ago. have moved several times since.

bike is off the pallet. started working at a metal shop, busting ass means getting access to equipment after hours- good deal.

the bike: 1978 kz 650. given i've never had a bike before, thought i'd be a good place to start. pretty sure it runs.. more on that later.

i've done a complete takedown. all hardware seperated in baggies, labeled. nifty manual waiting to be used. have spent the last 2 days sandblasting parts- looks like new, am looking forward to painting. [sun needs to come out.]

my main question is that given the build- [cafe racer] and the length of my legs, i'm guessing it's time to start shoppin' for rearsets. given the price, i'm wondering how i go about finding the right set. just looking for suggestions.

that and if anyone happens to know where i can score a wiring harness, that'd be super. got one, but it's been tweaked by previous owner.

thanks, for any suggestions. i'll start snapping some shots as the bike comes together. thankfully i also have access to a CNC waterjet which i'm pretty sure might come in handy.

cheers!

Welcome.

I will be using a set of GSXR600 pegs on my 650 once all the parts arrive. It's any easy swap for the rear disk brake models as the brake light switch and master cylinder come all on the same mount.

Try a search for rear sets, as it's been discussed a few times.

Keep us posted on your progress, and with pix. B)

Ive got 2004 GSXR 750 Rear sets on my KZ. Not too hard to adapt. Should be easy for you since you work in a fab shop. I just bolted the left side to the frame (drilled Holes) and Made a very simple bracket and welded it to the frame on the right side. Works great. and like was said before, the Gsxr brake hose bolts right up to the stock caliper and you can use the suzuki resivior as well.

hi stinkfist. i'm going to look in to the 2004 gsxr rearsets. i'm pretty sure if i can just see a pair on a local bike in town and understand the mechanics, i'll just program and fab a set. if that works, there will be a post about it :)

when i first got this bike, my excitement took over and before riding it, i started takedown. i'm keeping my fingers crossed.

cheers,
ben.

Used '05 zx6 rearsets on mine....pretty easy to mount up, just drilled holes for upper rearset mounts and fabbed spacers to keep linkages all plumb. Got both sides w/ linkages, rear caliper, and brake hose for $80/U.S. via E-Bay........
Search forum for "rearsets"....you should get back plenty hits for ideas. Oh yeah....keep them pics coming!!;)

looks like they have you covered on rear sets. the wiring harness might be a tough one. American classics might have one (they are in the links on the side of the page i believe)
actually i just checked and only found ones for the 900 and 1000:pinch: I bet if you posted enough in the electrical section we could help you fix yours

Hey man, welcome!

I made my own rearsets using the brackets that came with the bike. Take the pegs off of the brackets, switch the right side bracket to the left and vice versa (but keep the right peg on the right side).

I used a ZX6 shifter and a M10-1.25x100mm bolt, some rubber hose, washers, nylon bushings, a spring from a fake Bigsby guitar vibrato tailpiece, electric drill, Dremel, various files & rotary bits, X-Acto knife, some lithium spray grease, a chop saw, a mig welder and a little Southern Engineering.

I tore down my bike and rebuilt the harness myself. You can find all from www.mikesxs.com . You can completely rebuild your harness for around 100 bucks. It took me a weekend to finish it and it looks great. Here are a few pics of finished product.
