Belt conversion

Ok, so I'm in the process of changing from a chain to belt drive on my 79 400. So far everthing has gone to plan EXCEPT.
When I put the drive pully on it rubs against the clutch rod!!! Does anyone know if a smaller pulley was ever made for these. The parts i'm using are all off a 440. I'm sure theres a smaller pulley out there, whether its from a Kaw or something similar. The pully will completely go on as it is now. I looks like if I shaved off the end of the pulley all the way around I might get enough clearance, so it's not a problem but I'd worry about it being uneven and wobbling, not to mention the belt might walk off.

After some light research I've found that there was a 22 tooth sprocket and also a 24 tooth that I currently have. I'll betcha thats the problem, now anyone have a 22 tooth?

I'm sure you guys are sick of me talking to myself but, I located the pulley I think I need. I had the man count the teeth and measure the diameter. 22tooth and just about 4inches he said. The 24 tooth one that I have now is 4 3/8. So that should give me plenty of room.

I'm gonna keep updating this as I've been searching the forums and can't find anyone that has ever successfully done this. I want all the answers here for anyone else.

Good thinking about documenting this. Pictures are good too!
Friends like these, huh Gary?

Sorry, couldn't resist. That's quite a memorable movie.

Yea, keep us updated and include some pics. I have always wondered if those 440 parts would work on a 1000. Belts are pretty nice. They are a lot quieter and lighter and require less adjusting and last much longer from what I've read. Good luck and we need pics!!:)

I'm getting my camera back from the repair shop soon, don't drop them their fragile.
Why a belt drive? I guess I like the idea of no oil flying everywhere anymore, also I get into changing stuff around like this. It will make it unique. And because I can.

I'm glad to see some of you know one of the finest movies of all time!!! Dare I say greatest movie ever?
Phone's ringing, Dude.....Thank you, Donny
