530 CHAIN CONVERSION
04 Apr 2007 06:23
I want to change from stock 630 chain to an aftermarket 530 chain on my 78 KZ1000. Will the stock sprocket ratio (15 front and 33 rear) work with that chain or do I need to change it?

Well, the ratio will work, but I think you might have a tough time finding a 15 front and 33 rear in 530 size.
15/33 equals a 2.2:1 ratio if my math is right, so you can get 530 sprockets with more teeth and maintain near the same ratio.
Near 2.2:1 ratios using 530 gearing.
16/35 = 2.1875:1
16/36 = 2.25:1
17/37 = 2.1765:1
17/38 = 2.2353:1
Two things to think about.
It is commonly accepted that smaller diameter sprockets increase chain/sprocket wear, and also (for the same reason) that it's better to have odd/even numbers of teeth, example of even (not good) is a 16/38, odd (better) would be a 17/38 or 16/37.
I have never kept a bike for long enough to verify those statements though

Thanks to STEELL for a very good detailed response. You are right, I was not able to find any 15/33 sprocket combos for 530 chain.
KZERIDER, thanks for your info as well.

running 18/40 on my setup, that comes out to 2.222222.
don't forget to purchase the spacer that goes behind the new sprocket.
the 530's don't have the boss on the back of the c/s sprocket to offset it. comes out to about 1.25/1.30mm. z1 sells those as well.
hell, just order it from them! 8^)
