750 rear axel fit a 1000?

to add to my problems I dicked up the threads on my axel today. Will an axel from 750 fit on my 1000? They seem to be a lot easier and cheaper to come by. I think they are the same but I figured I better ask before I waste any more time and money

76-80 750 twin axle is the same diameter as the 1000's up to at least 80, but I'm not sure about the length.
