Welcome Kodiak565! If your frame VIN starts with Z1F-XXXXXX, then you have a KZ900A (or depending on the associated number, a Z1). If your frame VIN starts with KZ900B-XXXXX then you have an LTD.:)

Lots of little differences, and many of the LTD parts fit on the Standard, and vice versa.
Checking the frame number is the best way, but if your bike has any of these:
Chrome instrument covers
Chrome chain guard
"KZ900 LTD" written on the side covers
Missing a center stand
3.6 gallon gas tank (about 4.5 gal on the Standard)
Front blikers mounted on the handlebars
... it might be an LTD

Don't forget,

Alloy Wheels, usually an LTD does not have the spoked wheels, or maybe never?

Yeah, Kodiak's bike has spoked wheels. So if it was manufactured as an LTD, the original Morris Mag wheels were removed and replaced with spokers.

i have a 1976 LTD. bought it from an old time restorer just a few months ago. it has chrome guage trim, mag wheels, front t/s on handle bars, not sure about capacity of tank but it is an unrestored RED tank, don't think my side covers have LTD on them thou? I have confirmed the originailty with him many times, as I want to replace some items with NOS. He continually tells me EVERYTHING on the bike is original. I have not figured out all the B1,B2. etc. From info I have read mine is a B2.
Hope this helps. BUT!!!! VIN # tells the real story!

All 900LTD are a B1, there was no B2 I don't believe unless they made a very few undocumented early 1977 deemed B2. For anyone not familier, Kawasaki would name each model of a particular series with a letter and the number after that would denote which year of that model the bike was in the production. It is a rather strange way to do it if you're not completely familier with what year a particlar model was released. The KZ900LTD was released in 1976, and LTD was "B" so 1976 KZ900LTD=B1. The KZ900A aka Z1 was released in 1973 so 1976 in the standard KZ900 would be called KZ900A4 meaning the 4th year. The strangest part is the letter designations are different for every CC, KZ900B1= 1976 KZ900LTD, KZ650B1=1977 KZ650 standard, 1977 KZ1000B1=1000LTD, 1981 KZ1100B1=GPZ1100. Strange system really. All 900LTDs had KZ900LTD on the sidecovers and were either "red" or "white" depending on how much sun they got. I remember seeing white ones before 1978. Just a joke, all were red, but that red faded really fast. Finding one with original unfaded paint is extremely rare.

321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

Edspring1:
You really need to post a picture of your bike! Original 900LTDs are pretty rare, and I'd sure like to get a look at it.
The original paint scheme is "Classic Luminous Red" with two stripes - one gold and one bright red. Your side covers should be the same color, with the same stripe pattern (same on the tail piece), and they should have a badge that says KZ900 LTD. Here's a pic:
