KZ750B Extended fork problem! was created by speedadict
Hi everyone. I just bought a 77 KZ750B today. Some idiot... ah I mean... "Some-one" extended the forks about 6 inches back in "the good old days" and screwed up a perfectly good motorcycle. Needless to say, I don't like it... What I do I need to do to put it back to stock? Cut the tubes down, or do I just have to find a different set of forks all together? Thanks for your help.

I think You'd be better off trying to find a set of original forks.Cutting those ones down would be a lot of work,and would it even be possible to do it,and to get it right?...no idea.
I'm sure Someone here has a set of forks.And You can use forks from a 900 or 1000,so You're not limited to searching for 750 forks only(they're all the same).B)
Get a deal on a set and get new seals for them,and change the oil and You're good to go.
Trying to modify the ones You have is going to be a huge P.I.T.A.

they arent extended with slugs are they? maybe hidden by the headlight brackets? kinda hard to tell in the pic

That was cool when I was in high school in the late 60's.
Have you checked that they are actually longer tubes, and not slugs under the covers/headlight ears?

I'm sorry. Who would do such a thing?? That just looks weird.
Anyway, is it just me or do they look funny at the top just under the headlight brackets? I don't know about the 750 but it seems to have some kind of coupling that my 1000 doesnt have. Could it be something threaded into the area the fork caps screw in? I don't know what a slug is if it isnt a slimy thing that disolves in salt :)
I bought a set of good forks off ebay for about $70, and I've seen them go much cheaper than that. I may not need the ones I'm taking off but they have some pitting and need seals. Course i havent gotten around to swapping them out yet.

If you pay for shipping I'll sell you my old 650 forks for $25.00. They're stock, they don't leak, and they're rather clean too. Let me know if you want them and I'll grab them for ya.

The 650 forks (or upper tubes alone) will work, but they are about an inch shorter.

Looks like they swapped in LTD style bars too? Clutch cable looks a bit long, but the exhaust looks a little short...:whistle:

Slugs are short sections of fork tubes available in various sizes designed to insert and add length to the stock fork tubes. They are threaded (male thread) on one end to screw into the stock tubes where the fork cap usually fits, and the other end has female threads to accept the fork cap.

Fork tubes with slugs are weaker than solid fork tubes, and using slugs is considered dangerous because the forks are likely to break apart at the joint while riding.

Slugs are the poor man's answer to extending forks as they are much cheaper to purchase than longer fork tubes. :)

...And just a minor point of order, I'm sure it's a '77 but the front brakes are mounted like a '78+, meaning behind the fork leg instead of in front.

So when you go to replace the leg just be mindful of how you plan to mount it... of course you'll be looking for new brake lines and all that anyway... and since you'll want to get rid of those bars too, new clutch and throttle cables... :whistle:

I won't comment about how ridiculous it looks or anything... at this point it would be a 10 yard penalty for "piling on"... ;)
