79 kz rear brake drum
22 Mar 2007 12:21
Ok this is my first bike a 1979 KZ400 LTD. I purchased it in non-running status. I can fix that, but it is the brakes that bother me. I stepped on the rear brake pedal and the wheel locked in place. I had to pry the brake lever attached to the drum in order to get the wheel to turn again. I removed the real wheel and the rear brake. With the pads removed should I be able to turn the lever that cams the brake pads out, or should it be extra difficult and require the leverage given by the brake pedal?
Thanks for any help.

I have ordered a replacement set of brake pads. One of the linnings did fall out when I removed the brake from the rear wheel.

Was that bike on Craigslist the other day?
Check the brake pedal while you have it disconnected and make sure it moves freely, it's not uncommon for the break pedal to sieze on it's pivot when the bike has been sitting for awhile.

yep this was the bike that was posted on craig's list. needs a little more work than I expected, but I got it for $280 with a spare engine.
Thanks for the advice on the brake pedal. I plan on soaking most of the bikes moving parts in WD-40. The bike has sat for a long time.
