were would be a good place to get a cheap headset/tripletree bearing?

You'll find a plethora of listings for them on eBay everyday for around $30~$40 a set, or you could get them from Z1 Enterprises for $31.95 + shipping and be done with it.

Personally I'd go with Z1 Ent, since Jeff always stands behind what he sells.
