extended monoshock swingarm
11 Mar 2007 19:44
I just purchased a 1980 KZ ltd 1000. this is my first street bike, and it hopefully will be heavily modified. My first order of business is to swap the stock swing arm with an extended monoshock swingarm. I've seen it done, so I know it's possible, but I'm having a hard time finding any info on what parts are compatible, and how much of a headache making the jump to monoshock will be, as far as connecting the rear shock onto the frame. I also dont know how expensive this modification will be. I don't nessesarily want a huge strech, just a few inches longer than stock. If anyone has any advice, it will be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks!!!

first off, welcome to the forum
most new mono shock swingarms are a bit longer anyway. the 636 arm on my bike is about 3-4 inches longer than a 650 arm, so about 2-3 inches longer than yours, if you want longer, there are bolt on swingarm extensions or have a competent welder/fabricator to make it longer. Muzzys does this for example. if you can weld steel, you can make the shock mounts , so just buy some steel tubing and your pretty much set for the big stuff

Well to answer your question real easy, its gonna take a lot of fab work and time. First you will have to have all parts on hand. shock swingarm wheel and tire combo. This way you first setup for ride hight. You need to know the sag of the spring with the weght of the bike and then the weight with you on it. Then you will have to crossbar the frame and put in supports all around the frame. see the thread on bobbing the frame. Then you will have to weld the cross bar in and weld tabs to your swingarm to support the shock. This is obviously just a few things to take into consideration. It is most likely going to take a lot of fabbing to get it set up right and not be a rolling death trap.
