grease for steering ball bearings??
24 Feb 2007 07:38
Hi all...
a few weeks back i took apart the steering column (forks and all)...
i've repainted the parts and am reading to reassemble...
i had taken out all of the ball bearings (messy little things!) and am going to clean them up and reinstall...
i assume simple wipe down (the best i can) with paper towels is the best way to get them clean-ish.... no washing, right???
anyway, i'm going to have to run out and get some ball bearing grease....
and particular kind? (i have a 1978 KZ 400)...
thanks....

ps. i searched the "search" and really did not notice any thing re: type of grease...

Naaaaaa Nothing special, just dont get anything from ACE hardware. I got some grease from there that felt like liquid sand

Standard wheel bearing grease has worked fine for me to grease up the steering bearings.
Since you already have it torn down that far, you'd be better off by installing a tapered bearing kit like Z1 Ent has rather than putting back the old individual ball bearings.![;) ;)](/media/kunena/emoticons/11.png)

I second the tapered bearings. Well worth it.
