Swaping 16\" wire wheel for 18\" mag?

Hi,

I was wondering if it is possible to swap the wire wheels for mag wheels on KZ650s. My bike has wire wheels with a 16" in the rear. Drum brake in the rear and single disk in front. I have the opportunity to pick up a real nice set of mag wheels, cheap. They are off an 80 B model and look like they will fit (same brake config). Only potential problem is that the rear mag wheel is 18 inch. Does anyone know if it will fit the frame and if it does how significantly will it change the way the bike rides?

Thanks!

By all means pick them up, especially if they are cheap. Your bike originally came with an 18" rear wheel so you are not going to have any clearance issues. They did not make a B model in 1980, the only model offered was designated an F model. These were only sold for one year and were sort of a blend of the earlier B and C models. They had the single disc and rear drum like the B but came with the mag wheels like the earlier C models. It is worth going to the mags just for the ease of maintaining them and the bike should handle a bit better with an 18" rear tire. Wireman makes a good suggestion in getting all the assorted spacers if you can.
