What make / model KZ650 do I have?

Hi,

Trying to figure out exactly what model / year KZ650 I have. I checked the spot where the frame number is supposed to be and instead of the standard Kawasaki frame numbers that I have seen on this forum and referenced in manuals, other sites, etc. Instead I have “KAF01150”. It is stamped into the frame no stickers or anything. Could this be a salvaged or after-market frame?

The engine serial number is “KZ650BE108308”. I am not sure if the engine originally went with this frame. Previous owner doesn’t know anything about the bike either (it was given to him). The bike has obviously been in at least one crash. The points housing has been put back together with Bondo and the bottom of the engine painted black. There are a few broken cooling fins on the cylinders, the turn signals and headlight are in rough shape and it looks like the front brake lever spent some time being ground against the road. It has mikuni carbs w/ accelerator pump, air injection system, and points so I figure it is a 79 or 80. It has spoked wheels, rear is 16 inch front is 19 inch. Drum brake in the back and a single disk up front. I believe the seat is an after-market product from “Mustang” It has a Kerker 4 to 1 and a GIANT sissy bar. It also has been painted grey and all the badges pulled off.

Welcome CF - Check out this 650 site. They have a motor/frame reference list. This site should be able to help you out.

Just note that on that site they got the engine numbers and frame numbers mixed up - obviously the numbers containing an "E" are the engine numbers.

Thanks for the help guys!The engine serial number seems to indicate a 1979 C3, which seems very consistent with the engine setup I have, but I am still curious about the oddball frame number “KAF01150”. Doesn’t match up with any other frame numbers I have seen for KZ650s. Any one out there have any idea what kind of frame this is? Could it be an aftermarket or salvaged frame? or maybe from another kind of bike?
