Brake hoses
09 Feb 2007 14:45
OK, I've just about gotten everything torn off the bike. I mean, bare frame, man! As I've been taking it apart I've been building a pile of "gotta replace!" parts. I'm at the pile of brake parts, so here's the questions:
#1. I can get Goodridge Universal braided hoses and ends for about $150. What are my other choices? Does somebody sell these cheaper than that?
#2. I'm planning on eliminating the front brake splitter and just run two lines from the master cylinder via a double banjo bolt. Sound OK?

Have you tried Spielger or Russell brake lines? Also did you price out premade set, or did you price the hoses and the fittings seperately? I would say that $130-$150 sounds about right for a two line front set and a rear line.
I have a Goodridge 2-line set waiting to go on my 'Strip-fighter project. There is no problem running two lines from the M/C except you'll lose the brake light pressure switch but you can run a banjo bolt with pressure switch built in.

OK, that's my question. Who do you buy other brake hoses from, if all you have within 100 miles is Hogley dealers? I'm kind of stuck buying through the internet, and I don't find anybody on the 'net that sells brake hoses for a 26 year old bike.:S Am I looking in the wrong places?
And, on my master cylinder, the brake light switch is mechanically operated by the lever movement. I could have NO brake hose, and the brake light would still work!

whilst searching for stainless lines. Scroll about 1/2 way down to "Earl's". $7.75/ft for the lines.....fittings priced individualy. Just got to measure and do the math....

Here's a place that has some prefabbed lines - Pegasus Auto Racing . Scroll down - Page 72 of their PDF catalogue has lines in some common lengths made up (at the bottom of the page). The prices don't look too bad.
Kawasaki.com has the brake line lengths listed in the parts diagrams for some bikes. Be aware that at different places the fittings may or may not be included in the lengths listed. I don't know if Pegasus includes the fitting in the lengths there on pg 72.
If the line length isn't known, I find that it helps to disconnect the pipe joint & caliper to measure the hoses. Also, the long zip ties come in handy for measuring, particularly the upper hose. On the bikes with the goofy mini-apehanger handlebars: if new handlebars are installed & a shorter upper hose is needed, disconnect the pipe joint & lower it, then measure the overage & subtract that from the total length of the hose - voila', correct length needed. JMK.
Edit : 81 Gpz1100-B1: 370mm upper hose = 14.5"; 550mm lower hoses (2) = 21.6"; 415mm rear brake hose = 16.5"; 4 straight banjos. Total cost = ~$110 + shipping. Two front line instead of three will save about twenty bucks or so, assuming the 36" lines are long enough (Note: the banjos should add some length).

Post edited by: H1Vindicator, at: 2007/02/11 20:35

Cycle Gear has the two-line front set for 89 bucks in my area... not specific to a KZ but there is probably a set in the web site that will work.
