KZ650 F1 wheels onto B3? was created by Fourtoes
I've just put a spare set of wheels onto my z650.

They are off a 1980 F1 650 onto my 1979 B3. The rear one now being the 16 inch version.

After making all the adjustments and checks I noticed the tyre is about 2mm from the torque arm on one side and chain on the other. Surely this is too close. IS it just a case of getting a narrower tyre?

Sorry didnt check tyre size, I'll do that tomorrow as its late now and very cold outside.

Any suggestions appreciated.

I thought the F series 650s came with 18" rear wheels.

2mm does sound very close. I have a 130 size tire on my 18" rear rim, with about 1/4 inch / 6.35 mm clearance on each side.

Gonna put in my $.02 here. If you have a 16" mag wheel set up for drum brakes it would have to be from a 1980 650 LTD. The LTD was basically an SR650 that Kawasaki decided to rename 650 LTD. The 78 and 79 650 SR came with triple disc brakes. The 650 CSR used spoke wheels up until the last year they were made (1983) when Kawasaki decided to put mags on them. So your rear rim would have to be from one of the two, 1980 650 LTD or 1983 650 CSR. The LTD used a different front wheel with the larger diameter axle than the 650 CSR. If both wheels came from the same bike and you have the larger front axle the donor bike would be a 1980 650 LTD. Hope this helps.

Here's an excerpt from J&P Cycles Tech Tips:

Generally, for every 10 mm in tire size we grow, we add 0.400” to the width, or 0.200” to each side of the tire. Going back to our limiting factor, the distance to the belt or chain, if we have a 0.250” space, we can put on a 140 mm tire.

When we attempt to install a 150 mm tire, it is 0.800” wider than stock, or 0.400” on each side of the tire. If we have at least 0.450” when we measure, we can put on that fat rascal. This will give 0.050” clearance, tight but adequate.

As 0.050" is 1.27mm, your 2mm would seem okay according to the Tech Tip. Having never actually done this, can't vouch for any of it. Just thought it might be of interest to you. :)
