Chain and sprockets question was created by riverroad
I just scored me some new 530 sprockets and chain for my bike.
Anybody know off hand what the torque specs are (in ft lbs) for the front nut and the rear nuts?
I'm also missing one of the rear sprocket nuts (I know...sounds like a personal problem). Anybody know what size they are (10mm, 11mm?)? I'd like to find some iridited grade eight nuts for this. What would be really cool, is if I can find some that are drilled for safety wire.
And does everybody use Loctite on them? Blue or red?

Bump.
43 views, and no one knows the torque specs for the drive chain sprocket bolts on a KZ1000?
There has to be at least one KZ wizard on here that knows.

FSM for '77, '78 and '79 KZ1000 models shows the following torque specs:

Engine sprocket nut @ 7.5-8.5 kg-m or 54-61 ft-lbs

Rear sprocket nut @ 3.6-4.4 kg-m or 26-32 ft-lbs

FSM shows no locking agent application for either sprocket.

Would guess these specs also applied to the 1980 model, but am uncertain.

If converting from 630 to 530, here's some info from Z1E

www.z1enterprises.com/reference/chain630to530.aspx

Would suggest also checking the archives for the pros and cons about converting 630 to 530 and the several threads containing excellent advice on critical installation procedures and safeguards (especially regarding the engine sprocket) which also address the matter of locking agents, whether to apply and which type. Don't recall whether blue or red was recommended.

Don't know offhand exact size of the rear sprocket nuts or whether available in a version pre-drilled for safety wire.

In my manual it says 30ft lbs. Then the front sprocket to 60ft lb. Check HomeDepot for the missing nut. Just give them a sample and they can get you another one like it. As for red or blue locktite I dont know, but aren't there locking tabs for those bolts. the Color of the locktite don't matter I guess. Ass for the size of the bolt I dont know as yet.

Thanks Patton and kzwolfjr, I'm all ready now.
I'll check out Home Depot for them nuts, although I know they won't be drilled for safety wire.
I never did like them chintzy locking tabs, although I know they work. I just think safety wire looks better.
So that leaves me with Loktite. I'll just use the blue stuff. The red stuff is sometimes too strong. I've busted bolts off at the head on aircraft parts that were assembled with the red. Evil stuff.
Thanks again.B)

10MM for my bike, but take a nut with you(maybe someone from here) to Home Depot, and see if they have anything that will lock with the mounting tabs. You also might want to convert the carb bowl screws to allen head while you're looking for fasteners. Should be 4mm X 12MM. Take one of these with you too.

The best way to remove nuts and bolts that have loctite on them is to hit it with a little heat from a torch. ;)

Thanks Corey, but right now I'm going to leave the carbs alone (they work), but I'll keep that in mind.
tw, adding heat is good advice, and I know it works, but usually I'm working on live fighter jets. I'd probably get shot if I approached one with a lit torch. It'd be ok on my bike though.

Thread Lock Red works, but you don't need any if you're using the locking tabs.
