Yes, you can definitely do them yourself.
I've done several in the last couple years.
It helps to have a friend help, four hands are better than two.

The first time may seem difficult, but each time gets easier and easier.


Now let me see if I can find that cool do-it yourself article....

Check out the 2x4 lever they used to break the bead.




BTW, the rim guards are nice. But you can save some $$$ by using empty plastic bottles like oil bottles or shampoo bottle. Just cut strips out of them and you can use them a couple times before they are trash.

If the tire has been on there for 20 years, it's gonna be a PITA even with that block of wood and the press. IMO it's well worth $5-$10 to have someone with an air operated bead breaker get the old tire off. Fresher install comes off much easier.

It's a good idea to clean all corrosion off the rim with wire brush and sand paper. Use tire mounting 'wax' and your replacement will go on easy and it won't corrode further. A careful cleanup and it will hold air very well.
