Identification number - HELP, asap was created by gmbiowa
I really need someones help! The Department of Transportation (DOT-Iowa) is questioning the ID number stamped on the steering head of the frame. Here is what is happening. I purchased a 1981 KZ750 LTD (4 cyclinder) from a local farmer. I registered the bike at the county courthouse, turning in the previous owner's Iowa title and receiving a new title and license plate. All seemed fine until I received a call from the court house saying they were told by DOT that I needed to take a rubbing of the frame number and drop it by. I did this and they matched it to the title and said it looked fine. My wife received a call today at home from DOT saying that the number should be 17 characters, not the 13 I had on the rubbing and title. Here is the number I have on the bike: KZ750H-014431 The sticker next to it has the same number and says manufactured 7/80 (not sure why it isn't 1981). I purchased a Kawasaki Service Manual and on the back of the cover it says "KZ750H-013501 or JKAKZDH1_BA017021" (The underline is really a small box). This number has 17 characters. This could be the number they need. Is this number on the bike somewhere? Please Help, Greg.

I checked Zedder, and they list the '81 750 as follows:

'80 750E1:
Frame No. Range KZ750E-000001 - 011733

'81 750E2:
Frame No. Range (old) KZ750E-012001 - 013721
New VIN Range JKAKZDE1vBA013722 - 032400

'82 750E3:
New VIN Range JKAKZDE1vCA032401 - 037381

That's all I could find.
Here's the link to Zedder:

Thanks kano for the prompt reply. The title I first got was a regular title that matched the numbers stamped on the frame. I believe they would have to tell me if it was a salvage title. I will look into that. ltdrider, thanks for the web site link and your prompt reply also. I see that there is a new version vin number. Do you know were to locate that number on the bike? Thanks, Greg

You're gonna have to take the bike down to the local DMV and reeducate them f**ls. It's not a big deal, just the regular stuff that regular folks have to do to keep our publick servants convinced that they're actually doing something.

The earlier model KZ750H bikes had a short serial number. Don't know why. Somewhere along the way the numbers got longer. My guess is that your 1981 bike is really a 1980 model, but was not sold and titled until 1981. If your steering head says you have a KZ750H, then you have a KZ750H1, which was the 1980 model. The 1981 models are marked as KZ750H2.
