KZ440 chain replacement
02 Jan 2007 08:51
Hello -
I recently bought a 1980 KZ440 from the original owner. It's in great shape but needs routine maintenance. Soon I'll be replacing the drive chain & sprockets. Sprockets are available, but the chain I need is a 520-104, if I remember right. I'm pretty sure the chain on it is original. It has a u-clip master link. 520 chains are sold in longer lengths than 104 - I think I can get a 110 or 120 and remove some links. How do I do that? I think a new u-clip master link will be ok, as opposed to a riveted master link. I've been told that u-clips aren't ok for bigger bikes but on this one it should be ok. Right?
Thanks
Dan

I forgot to ask - what would be a good brand / type of replacement chain? I'd hate to put a $200 chain on a $600 bike.
Thanks

I use clip type master links and have never had a problem.
I think you mean 530 chain.
To shorten a chain I use a dremel and grind off the head of a couple of pins then pry the side plate off.
Go to www.z1enterprises.com to buy your chain and sprockets, it's hard to find anyone that can beat his prices or service.
