Police bike not firing was created by flrydr
Greetings KZRiders,
this is my first post on the forum, and it seems like a kool site, I am looking at a 85 kawi police bike that a friend want to get rid of the problem is its not firing.
its getting fuel but non of the plugs are getting spark. He said it was running fine then one day it just died out and never started again. I suspect the Igniter box. but I am no pro at this stuff by any means.
so can you guys tell me if I am on the right track? can I use igniter from another model? what years/models can I use?

Welcome... perhaps some troubleshooting would be in order? PLEASE explain how you determined there was no spark on any cylinder just to confirm we are on the same page... If we can agree there is no spark on any cylinder:
First thing to check is to see if you have power at your coils? Have you checked that yet? Use a multimeter set to VDC scale and place the red probe on the wire where power is attached to the coil. There are two SMALL wires attached to lugs on the coil. One will be red or yellow/red or pink. The other will be black or green. The former wire (not the black or green) is power. Turn the key on and touch the POSITIVE (RED) probe to this lug. DO NOT TOUCH THE FRAME or you will cause a short. The BLACK (NEGATIVE) multimeter lead should be placed on a frame ground such as an engine bolt or anyplace on the frame where you don't contact paint. Turn the key on and check the voltage. If you get 12VDC, that is GOOD. If you get 11.5VDC or less, you should read the coil repowering article on my web site but that ain't the problem. If you get no voltage, you have wiring issues. Report back and I can tell you what to check.
IF YOU FIND 12VDC, the next thing to check is wire continuity from the pickup coils to the ignition coils to make sure you just don't have loose wires. You say you are getting spark on NO cylinders so I will take this as correct. This means that the problem isn't a single cylinder connection or a single bad plug cap; in other words, the problem is something that affects all four cylinders. This makes it important to understand that the assumption that there is NO spark on any cylinder will point us to a certain line of checking. When looking at the wiring, there is a connector between pickup coils and igniter. It is a white and four pin connector. Take it apart and use some contact cleaner on both sides' contacts and then put a dab of dielectic grease on the contacts and reconnect the connector. You can buy contact cleaner and dielectic grease at an autoparts store. There will also be another and similar white connector between the ignition coils and igniter. Do the same to it and recheck for spark.
If you have spark, great but if no spark, then the single component that would cause no spark on any cylinder is the Igniter. Your unit is common with these bikes (From www.kawasaki.com ):

I suspect later cop bike ignitors will work and not sure what the difference might be that would keep them from being listed. In any case, get on eBay and start checking.

All test confirmed that it must be the Igniter, the bike is getting voltage to the coils & connectors to the igniter. A friend is going to let me try his igniter off his 81 kz1000 & hopefully that will be the final test.
