If everything else is in good shape, then the culprit is most likely in the tach can - gunked up innards, most likely...

It's almost not a joke to say that if you own an old Kaw mechanical tach/speedo combo and can get even ONE of the needles to bump off the pin and read within %15 of reality, you're doin' good. ;)

Somebody, somewhere around here has a link to an outfit the restores the stuffins of said units, and it didn't sound outrageously expensive - say $100 per can or so.

Might be worth a gander...

Was tach doing this before cable was greased and what kind of grease was used? There have been reports here of people using chain lube or such to cables which could also produce these results. Hope this is the case cause it's a heck of a lot easier and cheaper to fix. Luck

i have a bit of experience with these things and one important thing i noticed is if the foam on the mounts are bad the speedo's and tachs do not read right. sometimes adding a few washers to tighten them up a bit causes more problems then you had to start with. they bounce or just plain dont read right at all. take a look at that foam under those babys and replace it with something cushy. these things do not like to be mounted too firmly...steve

My buddy had that problem with his H@nda. He took it off and shot down in the cable hole with some penetrating oil. It work fine after that, but the penetrating oil dripped onto the gauge face and dicolored it.

my kz550 tach sounds exactly like yours. the bike was parked in my garage for 10 years. the tach was fine 10 years ago, but now the tach needle is lazy....slow to rise and fall.

i got a quote from z-resto last friday. this is part of the email..."we can restore the KZ550 Gauges for $85.00 each. To repair your broken ones will be $25 extra each IF they are restorable."

i'm not exactly sure what he meant, but the price is either 85 or 110.

(BTW he sells restored kz1000 gauges for $149 each.)

Z1RESTO is a guy nicnamed Canyondancer (AKA Bob). He is the ONLY person I know who can make one of those gauges work right and he does a fantastic job making them look like new. His contact info is available through the z1enterprises.com web site. The guy is very methodical and painstaking in his work. I have seen it first hand!
