Amps required to drive Starter was created by Maverick
Howdy all,
I am hoping to find a smaller battery that I can fit under my rear cowling (ELR type) to clean up my ride for a cafe racer look. Unfortunately, my engine does not have a kick starter, so I need to have enough amps to drive my starter. Anybody know what kind of amps the '81 kz1000 needs to crank over? It has standard compression. Would two identical batteries in parallel deliver twice the amps as a single?
Cheers,
Mav

Yes, 2 identical batterys in parellel will double your available cranking amps over the single battery. Have no idea what kind of amps the starter pulls.

i will venture a guess and say at the mabey around 60 amps or so, with good connections and a warm day. for my BMW i bought a gel battery (DEKA i think) it was designed for a HD softail/sportster. i went to a battery store and said i wanted the strongest battery that would fit in the hole. the one my bike called for put out 250 CCA. the DEKA put out 625 CCA, would not believe it but i saw it. do not remember the exact dimensions but if you go to a good battery store they can help you out.

I just measured a 1977 KZ650. Turned the starter over for about 10 seconds on a warm engine and got 102A peak, 50A average.
