Coil Mod was created by minutiesabotage
I have a few questions about the direct to battery coil mod. I did a search as best I could, and did not find answers to these questions, so please forgive me if they have been answered already.

Does anyone have experience with the lifetime of the relays? It would seem to me that the relays would wear out rather quickly.

Also, does the delay (it is small, but is existent) in the relay closing have any effect on the ignition timing at higher rpms?

The relay does not oscillate to cause the spark. It simply turns on, one time, to power the coils. So there is no issue regarding timing with the relay. You still need points or an ignitor to oscillate the coils for the timing.

The relay should last a long time.

If the relay doesnt open, then how does the coil fire? They fire when the primary voltage is disconnected, correct?

the coil fires when the primary winding ground is interupted collapsing the field and causing the secondary winding to fire. ( points or igniter unit )

the relay feeds direct positive current to the coils avoiding the resistance of the wiring harness.

12 volts hit better than 9 volts

if you still have points this mod will burn them quicker than you can smoke a cigarette.

the purpose of the resistance is to avoid burning points when the key is left on.

a lot of guys put a dyna electronic ignition system on in place of points then experience a low voltage misfire

I do not have a points ignition. My question is how the coils fire if the voltage is never interupted. Which it wouldnt be if the relays don't open.

The ground is interrupted, not the hot side.

I have points and have had no problem with them after the coil mod.

I agree, I see no reason why the mod would burn points faster. The coils still have their resistance and are the limiting factor. It just restores coil-voltage to the levels they were when the wiring was new.
