starter

hi all. from some great advice i got my '78 kz650d1a sr carbs sorted out and got the bike started
but had to use the kick start which worked on the 3rd kick -after not running since 1984. so I'm pretty stoked. but with a good cranking,
new, fully charged battery the electric start wouldnt spin fast enough to get it going. i havent dug into it yet
and I'd love to hear from you all about where to start. thanks in advance

If you download my electrical fault finding guide from the link in my signature there is a flow chart for checking the starter circuit on page 20

Some how.......I am always skeptical of "fully charged" batteries.

I second what wookie said about his electrical fault guide. Even an "electrical genius" like me could understand...

You could do a voltage drop test.
Grab your meter
Meter on DC V
Turn off the fuel
bike shouldn't run... this is so you can test your starter
red probe on positive battery post
black probe on the starter lug(lug is in the green circle below) that the positive cable attaches to.
press the starter button
what is your voltage?
move red probe to negative battery post
black probe on engine block
press starter button
what is your voltage?
voltage should be as close to a steady 0.0v as possible.
turn off bike
