KE100 ignition coil
05 Jun 2025 21:36 - 05 Jun 2025 21:47
On a points/condensor ignition system, I'm questioning how much coil resistances really matter.
The aftermarket coil in my 94 KE100 read 1 ohm primary and 8k ohm secondary. The new aftermarket coil I received reads 4.5 ohm primary and 17k ohms secondary.
You would think in the internet age it would be simple to find the correct resistance values of an OEM coil, but no luck.
The bike would stall out, riding in the rain or squirting water on the 1 ohm coil. I put the new 4.5 ohm coil in today and went for a 1 hour ride. The bike ran great. (did no do water test yet)
If 4.5 ohms is much greater than OEM, what problems or damage could it cause?
p.s. I believe this is a magneto ignition system with points.

The higher the resistance, the less current that will be drawn so it shouldn't hurt anything. The higher resistance will produce a weaker spark but if it runs ok I don't see an issue. What does the FSM say it should be ?

The KZ200, which is an air cooled thumper with points ignition, uses a 4.2 Ohm coil, so I'd bet that your new coil is close enough for your KE. Finding a genuine factory service manual for it would be a good idea.

As it turned out, checking the service manual was a good suggestion. Why didn't I think of that. Back in the supplemental pages it listed primary 1.9 - 2.5.ohms and secondary 8k - 12k ohms.
