Neutral light stays on.

Hi, I'm looking for some help with my neutral light staying on. I have a 82 1000J. When I got the bike there was no neutral light so I replaced the switch. Now the light goes off when I shift into first gear, but comes back on second through fifth.

Was the old sealing washer left behind so it now has two washers ?

Nope, already thought of that. If I pull up or push down on the shift lever it will go out. I've had the cover off and pulled the sprocket and see nothing out of wack with the shift mechanism either.

The switch I have is 13151-5003.  I was told 13151-022 was what was used originally and that 5003 replaced it.

CMNSL does list both part numbers for the 82 "J" - have you tried fitting it without a washer (may need to find a thinner washer if it works without one)

A question for you. You indicate the light goes off when you put it into first, but comes back on when changed into any other gear. Is the bike sitting still when you attempt to change to other gears or is the bike in motion. IIRC one can not change to any other gear if not in motion, first and neutral are the only options when not in motion. Not sure what this is called but I have always thought of it as automatic neutral finder. But what do I know?

It's called the positive neutral finder system.
The final drive shaft needs to be rotating to be able to select second.
If the gearbox isn't turning you can only select first and neutral.

Yes I am moving when I shift to 2nd. Just sitting still when I shift to first the light goes out. It stays out when I take off. Soon as I shift to 2nd it comes back on and stays on. Even moving if I go all the way back to first it will go off.  Thanks for all the replies. I will try removing or adding a washer. Will let you know how it works out.
