Good reg rec brands
31 May 2025 12:14 - 31 May 2025 12:15
Hey guys, any suggestions on a good reg rec brand? I've got a KZ440 that destroyed its regulator rectifier unit following a serious electrical short (exposed insulator on a live wire just where it enters the metal right handlebar switchgear). I've spliced in one from a different bike (Enfield 350) which lacks a sense wire, so while this works, it's always spitting out high volts. Plus, it's a shunting type, and while I've fitted it to a makeshift alloy heatsink, it gets hot fast. This bike redlines at 8500 rpm, which is different from Enfields and the mopeds that this reg rec probably suits. Therefore, I don't expect it to last long as it would be stressed by all the current from the stator that it has to dissipate by heat.
So far, I've found Tourmax and Electrex. I suppose Tourmax is better? Are they both SCRs? Are there any mosfet type ones available?
Thanks

Hands down, the best three phase R/R is the Shindengen SH775, or the newer version SH847, SERIES units. These devices shut off the flow of current back to the stator when load demands are reached, thus preserving the health of the stator. Common "shunt" type R/R units, return excessive current to the stator, which causes overheat damage. I've bought dozens of used SH775 units off eBay, tested them on my 750, and I've never, ever, found one that didn't work perfectly. It's a nobrainer choice.
The SH847 has a higher load rating, which is unnecessary for our old KZ bikes. They cost a LOT more also. Look for a SH775 instead.
Regarding purchasing an SH775, go to eBay and search "4012941" or "710001103", and toggle "used". Sort by "lowest price" and go hunting. Make sure you can see "SH775" printed on the top fin, and make sure the plastic connector isn't broken.
For a connector harness, buy Triumph PN T2500676. Cost is about $12, and perform adaption to fit your particular bike.
Buying a china shunt R/R, for more money, is pure folly.

Brilliant suggestions - thanks. This is a single phase system though. So far, good brands look like Shindengen, Rick's, Tourmax and Electrex. Wonder if I could find a Lucas one, though. They do mosfet-type as well. Oh wait, theirs don't seem to suit the high VAC coming from the stator.

My understanding, is that a three-phase R/R can be used on a single phase charging system. Simply hook up the two wires, instead of three.
