Dyna Coils opinions requested

I’m about to order my third set of green 3 ohm Dyna coils in the last 5 years, unless you guys have a better idea.

They work great when they’re not shorted but this bike is a daily driver to me, and I need something that won’t leave me stranded.

Bike is lightly modded, Mikuni RS carbs, 4-1 exhaust, 1075cc kit, Dyna S ignition, and ported head. Nothing crazy just need a good hot-rod coil. 

Do you mount them with non conductive (plastic) spacers ?  Using the steel spacers is an easy path for shorts. I used some plastic spacers 1/4 ID x 1/2 OD. Got them at the local hardware store.

Tbh I’ve used aluminum ones, but maybe that’s my problem? You think if I mount my next set of Dyna greens on plastic spacers I’ll get more than a couple seasons out of them?

I have had pretty good luck with Dyna coils over the years however I did install them on a friends bike and one 3 ohm coil did fail. Also in the last few years their prices have really gone up so the last few bikes I have used coils from 4 into 1 and so far so good. I also switched to the 5 ohm coils as they won't get as hot.

Also use a plastic spacer like advised above. Just get them at any ACE hardware store.

If you didn't use shrink wrap on the Aluminum spacers that could be your problem as they can arch across to the support.
Also make sure there is a bit of space between the coil and the mount bracket

 

Pretty sure 4-1 mostly sells amazon brands, but I have to admit that stuff has come along way. I’ve put some of their stuff on clients’ bikes and no problems since. 

Meanwhile I’m over here buying premium shit every two seasons haha.

Dyna does have awesome customer service tho I gotta hand it to them.

I'm running a set of the 5 ohm, 4 into 1 coils and no problems.  I agree the 5 ohm coils may last better if they don't heat up as much.  I also have solid core plug wires, no resistor caps and non resistor plugs.  Try to avoid having the ignition switch on for long periods (like when setting timing).  That will heat coils up and kill them. 

I'm running dyna coils on all my bikes and never had a problem.
The green ones on my daily rider Z1R have been faultless for over 25 years.
When fitting them attention should be given to the mounting spacers.
Firstly the stock coils spacers tend to be too short which allows the Dyna coil body to hit frame.
This causes the laminated core to flex as the mounting bolts are tightened which eventually results in the coils insulation to crack and the coil to fail.
Also one of the spacers sits very close to the connecting terminals which will often cause a short which either requires a slimmed down and shrink wrapped spacer or one made from non conductive material.
Another alternative which i now do is make an adaptor bracket which allows the use of the furthest mounting holes in the coils which gives plenty of clearance between the spaces and the terminals.

 

Once secured you can put a blob of RTV over terminals which will insulate and provide weather protection

I second the rtv on the spacers blob etc. I also have wrapped the aluminum spacers with electrical tape with rtv on top of that. Never had a issue. I second Dyna customer service is excellent.

This is my current mounting setup. They’re longer spacers than stock.

Looks like you are using the mount furthest away from the terminals too so shouldn't have issues with shorting.

I’ll get another pair of Dyna coils ordered up. I’ll try the plastic spacers and water-proofing the terminals. Thanks for all the help, guys.
